Discover the historical significance of Siuntio's Former Wooden Church
In 1685, a farily large wooden church was erected next to the eastern facade of the stone church. It was built to accommodate two services simultaneously, one in Swedish in the stone church and another in Finnish in the wooden church.
As new furnishings were donated to the stone church, the valuable older items were transferred to the wooden church. Thus, the old altarpiece and an older pulpit, among other things, ended up in the wooden church. It was said that the large wooden church in Siuntio had an interior that was among the finest in Finnish churches.
Eventually, the wooden church became redundant, as everyone preferred to attend the services in large stone church. Finally, the wooden church was dismantled in 1881. The building material was sold at auction, and the logs, among other things, were used to build a mill in Passila hamlet. The mill was subsequently destroyed in a fire.
